Tools & Principles

Tool selection – we’ve taken a step forward and downloaded an evaluation copy of Telelogic System Architect. Whilst we think we can do all the modelling we need with Visio, it’s the ability to join everything together and locate in a single repository that we think we’re lacking, so hopefully given the comments from Dubai Customs & the fact that Salford are using it, System Architect may do the job.

Architecture Principles are a critical input in TOGAF/developing an EA. The new LJMU IT Governance structure has already identified the senior body, the Information Management Steering Group, as having responsibility for Principles & Architecture, & the former will be a major item for discussion at the next meeting. As preparation & with the help of the Director of Computing & Information Services, we have been reviewing existing sets of Principles – in particular the example set contained in TOGAF, & those published by Transport For London (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/corporate/Data-management-principles.pdf) & Monash University (http://www.monash.edu.au/staff/information-management/principles/) which seem particularly useful.
